What are the commonly used refrigerants in a Refrigeration System and their applicable ranges?

Common Refrigeration System  and Applicable Ranges

1. Ammonia (NH₃)

Suitable for large-scale industrial refrigeration, cold storage, quick-freezing, and other high-load scenarios. Excellent refrigeration performance, evaporation temperature -33.3℃.

Strict safety precautions are required due to its toxicity and corrosiveness.

2. R22 (Freon)

Medium-temperature refrigerant, evaporation temperature -40.8℃, widely used in household air conditioning, commercial refrigeration, and industrial refrigeration.

3. R134a

Low toxicity, non-flammable, suitable for medium and low temperature air conditioning, automotive air conditioning, and small cooling equipment.

High water solubility, poses a certain risk of corrosion to internal metals of the system, requiring the use of appropriate lubricating oil.

4. R404A, R410A, R407C (Environmentally friendly Freon)

Suitable for medium and low temperature cold storage, commercial refrigeration, marine refrigeration, etc., with low ozone depletion potential (ODP≈0).

Due to its high global warming potential (GWP), energy efficiency and emission standards must be considered when using it.

5. R600a (Isobutane)

A green and environmentally friendly refrigerant, suitable for small household refrigerators and freezers, with high cooling efficiency and no ozone depletion.

Flammable, requiring a well-sealed system and fire prevention measures.

Zero ozone depletion potential, suitable for medium and high temperature air conditioning systems, with better cooling performance than R22. 7. R290 (Propane)
